Dubai 7s 2008
05/09/10
A new look Quins Vet’s set off for the 2008 7’s at the newly opened ‘Sevens’ ground in Dubai with hopes of surprising some of the more established teams, however it was not to be……
The team included 6 new vets and although the results were disappointing the effort and commitment of all concerned showed the club still has the player base to compete at Gulf level.
A tough pool containing Dubai Exiles I, Al Ain Amblers and the Arabian Potbellies resulted in some hard fought games but ultimately in 3 defeats. In the Dubai Exiles opening game the Quins fought all the way and eventually lost 21-12 with two debut tries from Glenn Carney. A second match against the Potbellies was a close 10-7 defeat with the Quins try from Mike Loane and a final 15 -5 defeat to eventual Cup finalist Al-Ain left the Quins at the bottom of the table and facing a plate quarter final against the plate winners from the last two events Cairo Rugby. The Friday evening game was never really close and Cairo ran out 20-0 winners, the Quins tried their best but against a well drilled and game hardened outfit it was not enough, the silver lining being that Cairo once again went on to win the Plate.
The team left Dubai once again ruing a lack of game time which all felt was the real difference between some of the teams we faced.
Onwards and upwards with all involved looking forward to giving it another go next year under the careful eye of the new club coach and Vet’s forward ‘Doha Dave’.
A special mention goes out to lifetime Quin Max Maxwell, try scorer extraordinaire Glenn Carney, departing coach Mike Loane, rugby debutant/tour gimp Donovan Fuller (even if he is Bok), Nobby for his dancing (not his rugby) and finally to me (Gav) who has now officially retired……!
